PG vs Hostel at Delhi University in 2026: Which One Should You Pick?

Every DU fresher's parent asks this same question: 'Beta, hostel milega ya PG dekhna padega?'. Here's the honest answer, without any listing-website spin.

The short version

DU hostels are cheaper but very hard to get. If you don't get one on the first cutoff, you almost certainly won't. Verified private PGs are the realistic default for most students, especially in North Campus.

Cost comparison

DU hostels: ₹40,000–₹90,000 per year, all-inclusive.

Private PG (sharing): ₹9,000–₹14,000 per month = ~₹1.1–1.7 lakh per year.

Private PG (single AC): ₹18,000–₹26,000 per month = ~₹2.2–3.1 lakh per year.

So PGs are ~2–3× the cost of a hostel — but you also get privacy, better food, and no roommate lottery.

Admission chances

Hostel seats are limited (usually 200–400 per college) and go by strict merit. If your CUET score is not in the top ~10% of admits, plan for a PG from day one — don't wait for the hostel list.

Curfew and freedom

Girls' hostels typically have a 7:30–8 PM entry.

Girls' PGs generally have 9–10 PM.

Boys' PGs are usually flexible.

If entry rules matter to you, filter for it before booking.

Food

Hostels: standard mess food, limited variety.

PGs: menu varies wildly — some are excellent, some are terrible. Always ask for a recent week's menu, and ideally visit at dinner time.

The honest recommendation

Apply for hostel if you're eligible — nothing to lose.
